Desperate need for 'innovative treatments like this one' that can attack disease 'in brand new ways', experts say

A cancer drug which uses an unprecedented Trojan horse approach to destroy tumours from the inside has shown promising results across six different forms of the disease.
UK researchers have hailed the results from early human tests of the drug, known as tisotumab vedotin (TV), after it stopped or shrank tumours in patients with no other options left.
The treatment combines a cancer-killing chemotherapy agent with an antibody, a biological molecule which binds to markers on the surface of cancer cells and causes the drug to be drawn inside.
Not all patients responded to the treatment, but its effects lasted an average of 5.7 months, and up to 9.5 months in some people, in trials on bladder, ovarian, lung, and cervical cancers which were no longer responding to standard drugs.

(180 posts)I was at the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce Inaugural Dinner last week, and one of the award recipients was Dr Patrick Soon-Shiong. He talked about the importance of journalism, since he owns the LA Times and San Diego Union-Tribune. I thought his acceptance speech was already inspiring....and then he broke out some amazing news.
He is leading research into a cure of the most common types of cancers (lung, breast, prostate and pancreatic) using no chemotherapy and non-invasive surgery. He will use the bodys own stem cells to fight the cancer. He mentioned that his team is currently treating 5 patients and 4 are in complete remission now. He is literally the kid who came from nothing, survived growing up in apartheid South Africa, got a chance to come to the U.S., and is gonna cure cancer.
I love hearing news like this. Thanks for posting.

(51,459 posts)my support group (SPOHNC) who went into a test for an autoimmune treatment. It didn't work and she is now under hospice care. She started with a throat cancer and it spread to her lungs. She has had several surgeries, radiation, and multiple courses of chemo. They said there is nothing else to do.
What does a 10-year survivor say to someone who is facing death?
