Elon Musks SpaceX pulled off the first West Coast launch and landing of its reusable Falcon 9 rocket on Sunday night, lighting up the skies of California.
The rocket, carrying an Argentinian satellite, blasted off from Vandenberg Air Force Base, near Santa Barbara, around 7:20 p.m. Sunday, and landed on a concrete pad at the base about 15 minutes later. All previous Falcon 9 launches had been from Cape Canaveral, Fla.

I have never seen anything like it.
If I didn't already know it was a Spacex launch I might have been freaked out.

home and did some Googling. He described it pretty much as a gorgeous comet before finding out that it was a rocket launching.

The satellite has SAR X-band and L-band. They can recoup their investment, and then some, if they find the fabled Inca gold rumored to be buried in Patagonia.
