Hurricane Harvey has caused NASA's Mission Control Center in Houston to temporarily reroute video downlink from the International Space Station to NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville. NASA described it as a "precautionary measure."
Johnson Space Center in Houston was closed today to everyone but "mission essential personnel" due to the heavy rainfall and flooding. Essential personnel still working at Johnson include Mission Control for the space station and support for the James Webb Space Telescope.
NASA has a backup mission control center it can activate in Huntsville, but no backup team has been sent to open it so far. Huntsville is where the space agency manages ongoing scientific research on the station, so full communication links are already in place.
NASA Flight Director Royce Renfrew tweeted Sunday that he had managed to make it to Johnson to relieve another flight director. "MCC kind of surreal," he said of the scene.
