?interpolation=lanczos-none&downsize=660 ?interpolation=lanczos-none&downsize=660

NASA's Cassini spacecraft has been snapping amazing photos of Saturn and its moons since 2004. See some of Cassini's latest spectacular photos of the Saturn system here. SHOWN HERE: An image of Saturn, taken by the Cassini probe on Feb. 19, 2016. The spacecraft captured this image from roughly 1.2 million miles, at 7 degrees above the ring plane using its wide-angle camera. The moon Dione can be seen in the lower left of the image. Read the full story here.

Fun fact- originally 2001 -was- set at Saturn, IIRC. At least in the ACC book. Warren DeMontague Apr 2016 #4
I'm guessing that Jupiter was sexier for the movies nt MrScorpio Apr 2016 #5

At least that's what I recall reading and hearing at the time. (I'm an old guy.) Douglas Trumbull, in charge of the special effects, couldn't get a convincing set of rings, so they decided to make the planet Jupiter. Saturn would have been more spectacular, if it could have been brought off.

it was the rings. I'm listening to the 2001 ASO audio book now. There is an introduction read by ACC where he tells about switching from Saturn To Jupiter because of the FX difficulties on the rings.
A lot has been learned about the rings since 1965.
