Most inhabitants of the northern hemisphere are familiar with the northern lights - but a photo captured from the International Space Station last week shows that 'southern lights' can be just as spectacular.
As activity blazed on the sun's surface last week, aurora erupted at both of Earth's poles - but space station astronaut Andre Kuipers had a better vantage point than most earth-bound photographers.

I could swear that on a flight into Anchorage one evening it looked like I was looking down on some nothern lights.
