Mars orbiter photographs big 'wart' and other mysterious object

By Carol Christian | December 8, 2014 | Updated: December 8, 2014 2:46pm

On a note of refreshing candor, one of the cameras trained on Mars has spotted what looks like a wart.

This image was sent back to Earth on Dec. 3 by the Mars Reconnaisance Orbiter, a satellite that was launched in August 2005 and has been orbiting the planet since March 2006. You can follow the orbiter's path around the planet via this simulated view, which is updated every five minutes.

NASA, which doesn't use the term "wart" to describe the odd area, calls it an "enigmatic feature in the Athabascan lava flows."

The circular enigma is about 1.2 miles across and is similar to an island surrounded by smooth lava flows, according to NASA.

A monument in honor of Ayn Rand and Free-market Economics, designed by
the John Galt of Mars.

Milton Friedman's ashes will be transferred there someday.
