Giant, unexplained half-mile long fissure opens up in Mexico
Science! By Ryan Whitwam Aug. 23, 2014 9:45 am
First giant holes start popping up in Siberia, and now this. A giant crack has opened up in the Earth near the city of Hermosillo Desde El Cielo in Mexico. The fissure is more than half a mile long and five meters (16 feet) wide in places. It happened to intersect Highway 26, which connects Hermosillo Desde El Cielo to the coast. Well, it used to. Now its impassable. Residents and geologists are understandably baffled.
The crack is as deep as 8 meters (26 feet) in some places, which is more than enough to cause problems if you were to wander aimlessly in the Mexican desert and fall in. You can only imagine how much more troubling it would be if this crevasse has opened up a few miles to the east in Hermosillo. As it is, farm workers have been diverting around Highway 26, but many of the smaller side roads in the area are in poor shape.

(6,913 posts)It looks to me like the website that published the article thought Hermosillo Desde El Cielo was a town name. It is, however, the name of the (business?) that controls the drone that shot the video, per the Internet and a New York Times article I found on the web.

SCIENTISTS and locals have been left stunned after a giant crack, almost one kilometre long, appeared in remote farmland in Mexico.
The eight-metre deep trench opened up last week and severed Highway 26 between Hermosillo and the coast in the north of the country.
Filmed by a drone controlled by Hermosillo Desde El Cielo, the spectacular footage takes viewers along the length of the trench, which is up to five metres wide.

(3,595 posts)The water to feed that vegetation came from wells. These were likely drained and formed a cavity that collapsed to cause the fissure.
