Petition Text:
When the Space Shuttle landed for the last time, many people thought NASA
was closed for good. Nothing could be further from the truth. Recently, NASA
made an inspiring new online vid narrated by Mr. Peter Cullen, the voice of
Optimus Prime, to show the progress being made on these new systems, but NASA
is barred by law from buying advertising for this spot.
Now we're running a crowdfund campaign to edit this video into a 30
second spot, and put it in over 50 movie theaters around USA, starting with
the premier of 'Star Trek Into Darkness.' By assisting this
campaign, youths can be reminded that an inspiring space program awaits, one
that is worthy of their ambition. So, we hope that Mr President can assist
the campaign in all forms.

(18,807 posts)Leaving aside the fact that Trek as a whole is often actually a pretty technophobic sort of setting, that sort of thing ends up convincing people that we can't have spaceflight until we're at that level of social and technological development (read: "never" .
You see the effects of that every time you see someone just use the word "science fiction" to completely dismiss one idea or another, whether they're hypothetical or actually being done right now, and you also see it every time someone pulls out that goddamn idiotic "we need to fix everything on Earth before we launch anything" argument. (That's also a code word for "never," of course, not that they'll admit it.)
