Siberian permafrost thaw warning sparked by cave data

Evidence from Siberian caves suggests that a global temperature rise of 1.5C could see permafrost thaw over a large area of Siberia.

A study shows that more than a trillion tonnes of the greenhouse gases CO2 and methane could be released into the atmosphere as a result.

An international team has published details in the journal Science.

The evidence comes from analysis of stalactites and stalagmites in caves along the "permafrost frontier".

Again we see the double edged sword of GW and CC. Another being the fact that old fungal trees emit high C02 due to fungal growth and therefore need to be cut down... they in effect have lost their "air cleaning" capacity which is essential for them and us. Analysis of this issue at face value is simply not deep enough. I hope the general public wakes up soon.

That Canadian Peat Moss you use in your garden comes from deposits hundreds of feet thick. As the areas under the Permafrost become exposed, they will begin to break down due to biological activity, with resulting production of Carbon Dioxide and Methane.
