Obama and Islam: A Closer Look

By Greg Houle | Yahoo! Contributor Network – Tue, Mar 13, 2012

Public Policy Polling released a survey Monday of potential Republican voters in today's presidential primaries in Mississippi and Alabama. In addition to asking voters about the candidates who are vying for the Republican Party's nomination, the poll also asked several questions about President Barack Obama's religion.

* According to a Newsweek poll in June 2008, 13 percent of those surveyed, encompassing all political beliefs nationwide, believed Obama was a Muslim.

* A Pew Research Center Poll in March 2009 suggested that among Republicans nationwide, 17 percent believed Obama was a Muslim.

------

* Some have suggested -- including The Atlantic's David Graham, who points to the work of political science professors Brendan Nyhan and Jason Reifler -- the notion the falsehood of Obama being Muslim has been repeated so often in recent years has helped to propel it forward. The belief is the more people who become familiar with an idea, the more likely it will be that people will start seeing it to be true.

Gotta love that persistent falsehood, as if being Muslim was a bad thing!

First of all, there is nothing wrong with being a Muslim. Secondly, being a Muslim is one of the religions that requires a great deal of formal observance. If you're a Muslim, you need to pray five times a day; attend a mosque weekly; and right now, as it's Ramadan, fast from dawn to sunset. It is not a religion you can practice in secret. If President Obama were a Muslim, it would be obvious.
