(Jewish Group) Jews Fight For Immigrants -- But Face Fierce Backlash From Anti-Israel Activists
(THIS IS THE JEWISH GROUP! RESPECT!!)
Tucson Jews for Justice is one of many Jewish resistance groups that have emerged nationwide to focus on domestic policy in the wake of President Trumps election.
The group has rallied against the Muslim travel ban and Trumps family separation policy. Theyve helped organize an event in support of the press and the First Amendment. Theyve even driven to Mexico to directly provide more than $1,400 worth of supplies to asylum seekers stuck on the other side of the border.
But that isnt enough for many of their allies on the left. In fact, members of the group say that theyve been bullied and berated by other local activists at three events in the last four months because they refuse to condemn Israel.
One group member, Terri Kagi, said that her 12-year-old daughter was traumatized after being yelled at by adults during a June rally against the travel ban, including by members of the local chapters of Jewish Voice for Peace and the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee.
We were in the process of converting [at the time], Kagi told the Forward. Were new to anti-Semitism. That was really our first experience being in a group with Jews and experiencing negativity
. People were yelling at us for being Jews, and for not being Jews the way they want us to be Jews.
