As an Irish woman of Jewish heritage and a proud feminist, since October 7 I’ve been heartbroken by the profound cruelty of Irish feminists towards Jewish victims of gender-based violence.

‘Ní saoirse go saoirse go mBan’ is an Irish phrase that translates into English as: ‘there is no freedom until the freedom of women’. In recent years, this slogan has resonated through Irish society as we fight for advancements in women’s rights.

A core tenet in the pursuit of our freedom and dignity as women globally is combatting domestic, sexual, and gender-based violence. Modern feminist movements have made this central to their work, leading to the enormous success of the #MeToo movement.

In the past few months, a common sentiment expressed amongst Jewish friends and acquaintances has been one of a profound sense of betrayal. Distressingly, it is one felt with respect to people, organisations, and institutions that were once wholly trusted. There has arguably been no betrayal more acute than that of ‘feminists’ and women’s organisations. Not least given that feminist movements have been enhanced by the contribution of countless Jewish women worldwide. Feminists allowed their biases to supercede every principle they purportedly stood for: believe all women, stand by all women, rape can never be contextualised, rationalised, justified.

1. Okay, I read the entire linked piece by Rachel Moiselle after getting through

the cookies pop up window and all.


I think her point is lost from the second the reader realizes that since she sees Palestinians as pure evil and of no value , there can be no compassion for their side of the history. So, when Irish women at the Irish university that Ms. Moiselle attends attack Israel overall about their historical treatment of Palestinians, she personalizes the attacks as not defending Israeli women regarding the horrible treatment by captors 10/7.

Women’s rights are important everywhere! Ms. Moiselle feels that Israeli women’s suffering at the hands of Hamas is much, much worse than the rights of all women in India, Iran, Saudi Arabia and other eastern nations.

6. There is no talking down.

The antisemitism that has surfaced here is the worse I have seen in over 20 years as well. It is painful. And what makes it even more insidious is how the war is being used as cover.
In this thread itself there is an example of the classic antisemitic trope that Jews think their suffering is special and that it makes them think they’re better than everyone else.

I know I wasn't caught off-guard and you are as astute an observer of behavior as I am, so we just knew what would unfold. Some "marvel" at our ability to predict the anti-Semitism, but to us, it isn't about "picking lottery numbers" predicting, it is as plain and simple as "predicting" the sun will rise in the east, and set in the wet. That is to say, it will always happen.

15. I just came across this thread after reading a

more recent thread in this forum.

I'm not Jewish, so I was caught off guard by the degree of anti-Semitism on the left. I wish that there were something that I could say to "talk you down," but here is what I have seen in my community.

I've been actively involved with two churches in my area which are "socially progressive." Their ordained clergy include women, LGBTQ+ people, African Americans, and people of Asian descent. Both have been active in civil rights for various groups.

So I looked up statement positions from their national denominations on the Israel-Hamas war. One of them said that Israel had brought the Oct 7 attacks on itself and called for a total, permanent ceasefire and accused Israel of genocide.

The other church stunned me with a Palm Sunday sermon out of the Middle Ages. I watched it online. If I had been there in person, I would have walked out conspicuously down the center aisle. The sermon used the trial of Jesus by Pontius Pilate to invoke the Medieval Christ killer accusation against Jews. It drew an analogy between the Israel-Hamas war and the Christian story of Pilate condemning Jesus only because "the Jews" demanded it. The sermon continued the analogy by saying that Pilate could have prevented the execution if he'd had the courage to take a stand against "the Jews" so people today must take a stand against Israel on behalf of Palestinians to end the "genocide."

I know the history of Palestine and Israel. I feel gut-punched by those churches, so I can't even imagine how Jews feel about the current wave of anti-Semitism. I am not a fundamentalist or literalist on religion. I chose involvement in those churches because I believed that they offered social activism that I could agree with.

They are mainstream denominations. One is Presbyterian. The other is Episcopalian. But both of them have churches in Palestine, so they have sided against Israel and use religion and sympathy for perceived underdogs in war to back themselves up.

A bright point is that we have an experienced, knowledgeable president in charge.

10. I wish I could, but I can't.

There is no excuse for it or its being allowed to continue. It is as it has always been, anti-Semitism/Jews are cheap and worthless to way too many people. Therefore, bigotry against us, well, not "really" bigotry in the eyes of those who spew it, defend it, and/or excuse it. Even worse, many a Jew also involve themselves in the process of denying, minimizing, mocking, or dismissing anti-Semitism.

I wish I could say "it will get better" but, frankly, I can't even swallow it enough to say it.

Just try to keep on, keeping on. It is what we do!

There is a hoodie I’m thinking about buying. It says:

I have to admit I would be a bit afraid to wear it in public. I know I shouldn’t be. That is where we are at.
