I am interested in hearing from other Orthodox Church members about the Pussy Riot trial in Russia.

I think that the five months they have been in jail is more than enough punishment for what they did. I think prosecuting them makes Putin look petty and dictatorial. What do you think?

There were murmurs about our new patriarch when he was elevated about him being pro-Putin. Now we have our answer.

There's a long history of protest using churches and holy sites in Russia. What they did was fine, and there's no reason to prosecute, let alone put them in jail for that long.

As far as I understand it, the police originally refused to arrest them. It seems pretty clear that the arrest was politically motivated, and the charge of hooliganism seems excessive since they didn't damage any property. I would think that at most a fine would have been imposed, but I don't know Russian law. I also do not think that the Patriarch should be openly supporting any candidate.

It's disturbing all around. Sure, what they did was a big deal, but there's no reason to press charges. If anything, doing that just makes everyone look up what the gals did and find out why, not to mention making the Church look stupid in the process.

Putin is Putin, church is church, but religion is religion
some people hate namely that religion, reason of that in Bible
that religion is attacked around the wold as least protected if to compare with Muslim and Judaism
which use Bible too
All of that about political motives is blah blah blah
I'm not particularly noticed that the Church called on to vote for Putin
I would say that the representatives of Christianity, Judaism and Islam take a neutral position in regard to the authorities in RF

Russian Orthodox Church has a 1000 year history
and should not be subjected to abuse due to the current
Church and political leaders

and if you hate some religion leaders you should talk about them and not about whole RussianOrtodox Church
like if you think that rus government foe#1 of USA you should talk about them and not about all Russian people
or it will be looked like racism

some people madly hate part of words and pages in the Bible, therefore they do everything in order to discredit the Christian religion

these people also require to call Christianity extremist religion because of these words in the Bible.

Proponents participating Pussy Riot, who was sentenced to two years in prison for "punk prayer" in Christ the Savior Cathedral, turn into vandals. Recently in Baltiysk two teenagers set fire to the Cathedral of St. George's Cathedral sea Baltic Fleet, and the temple walls scribbled with aerosol sprays.

Activists from the Ukrainian feminist group Femen cut down a wooden crucifix in the center of the country’s capital, Kiev, on Friday in support of m

I have some questions for you. First, it is my understanding that the Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church endorsed Putin before the election, and that this is what prompted the Pussy Riot protest. Believe me, I am Orthodox myself and I can understand that what they did was shocking to many people, but it did not seem to me that it was intended as an assault on the Church itself, but rather on the relationship between the Church hierarchy and Putin. Also, can you tell me more about the labor camp that the women were in; the reports I have read all said that they were in jail. As for the Guardian article, I don't find the comparisons particularly apt, which is not to say that we don't have severe abuses of all sorts of supposedly protected constitutional and basic human rights in this country. I look forward to your response.
