Catholic Group Targeting Obama

Updated June 20, 2012, 8:54 p.m. ET
By PETER NICHOLAS And DANIEL LIPPMAN

A Catholic lay group is waging a two-week campaign to rally fellow Catholics in opposition to Obama administration policies that it believes are hostile to religious freedom, bringing pressure on a re-election-minded White House to change policies on contraception coverage and other social issues.

The Catholic Association, a five-year-old group of "traditional Catholics," said that through July 4 it would try to mobilize up to one million Catholics across the country through emails, Web videos and Facebook postings.

The effort coincides with a two-week program beginning Thursday by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, dubbed "Fortnight for Freedom," a period of "prayer and education" on the issue of religious liberty.

As part of the campaign, bishops are asking Catholics to write to Congress and the Department of Health and Human Services opposing a requirement that most employers, including Catholic hospitals and universities, provide contraceptive coverage to employees at no out-of-pocket cost as part of their health plans.

I never heard of this group. It's pretty clear that it's an arm of the republican party.

it's very hard to object at Mass - we're encultured to sit down and be quiet. The priest can say just about anything, but a lay person speaking is a sacrilegious disruption! I can't imagine walking out halfway through Mass, either. But once the Bishops step across the threshold into the public domain, all bets are off! look for the counter demonstrations!

There were at least 2 letters from the bishop read and one video instead of a homily. I left each time.

I recently began attending mass again after a long time away. Halfway through the priest's "fortnight" sermon yesterday I got up and walked out. No disruption, just walked out. Couldn't take it. I am a huge Obama supporter and I personally feel that women should have control over their own bodies. I'll be back, but I'll walk out again if the sermon strays into right wing BS.
