What's up with all the anti-Catholic stuff?

Last edited Thu Mar 14, 2013, 10:20 AM - Edit history (1)

I'm not even Catholic (my wife is), and I'm bothered by a lot of the comments. Of course, I was raised as a Southern Baptist, so I'm used to catching flak over my affiliations.

Today is a wonderful (many would say blessed) day for millions of people across the world with the election of Pope Francis. Can't we let people enjoy this for a few days before the bashing begins in earnest? What's wrong with a feel-good moment once in a while? The requisite outrage can wait for a day or two.

1. A lot of people are selectively tolerant. They fight bigotry yet engage in it.

It's OK to some to bash Catholics, rural folk, overweight people, etc.

Pretty disappointing, isn't it?

As a fat, somewhat rural, Christian, I guess I'm in line for a flogging.

How'd you like to be an allegedly (to some) heretic Catholic? Try that one on for size!

(Oops, you'll find me with my foot usually lodged in my mouth. Since I have 40 lbs still to lose, though, hopefully everyone will understand I'm not slinging mud.)

Maybe a heretic's not so bad as a hypocrite, though. It's absolutely appalling the way some people behave. Don't they realize they're violating the core ethics of liberalism, which supposedly champions respect for diversity? I like to think I have a fairly good grip on the matter - that is, until someone mentions rightwingers, and then I absolutely go nuts. So I'm 'a work in progress'.

That's why I have to invite fellow liberals to rap my knuckles when they feel I'm getting out of hand. Do it gently, though. I have very sensitive feelings that way.

.... depending on your age and other factors which I don't know.

BTW, if anyone thinks I've dragged us off topic here, rack it up to 'Catholic guilt'! This time about extra weight. But I've been following de Spirito and Hungry Girl on Dr. Oz, and it helps.

Any complainers could at least be glad I'm not whaling (eek! there I go again!) away at rightwingers. It could be worse.

To digress even farther, as a landlubber I've always been fascinated with the ocean and stories about it. Oddly enough, Jacques Cousteau looked a lot like Harry Bridges at the same age. Harry's official portrait (blue shirt, no tie or jacket) hangs in my living room just as it does in every ILWU hall, and I've given up trying to explain who he really is; so when somebody asks isn't that Cousteau? I just shrug and say it sure does look like him, doesn't it. And let it go at that.

Well, it's part of my spiritual exercise trying not to take pointless paths. Sometimes I backslide all the way to square one. Other times I just soar and enjoy the freedom.

The second someone starts bashing any religious faith they go on my ignore list.

I figure then they have nothing to add to any conversation then.

Maybe it's time to think about it, though. Some of the posts I've read this week certainly disqualify the posters from any rational conversation.

I come to DU to discuss, and want to be aware of other opinions, but I expect mature, thought-given statements, and it's obvious that's not always the case.

The newer tendency to respond just with a subject line and NT is a symptom of that, as is the response to a headline rather than an article or even the original post. They're working with their guts rather than their intellects.

Many of the post have a atheist sound to them. They are using this time to spread what they believe is true. All we can do is ride it out.
