I missed sunrise by about half an hour.

I am, however, wearing my "Have Yourself A Merry Winter Solstice" sweatshirt. I celebrated with my group, the Assembly of the Sacred Wheel, this past Saturday. I'll probably be going to another Yule event this Saturday evening (provided that I don't test positive from the exposure to COVID at the ASW event).

Happy Yule to all!

I’ve been balling yarn and baking and enjoying a Dresden novella I had no idea existed, and giving that to the hubs as a great excuse to enjoy the day under an old, creaky cat. No big celebration for us, though, except light and warmth on a wonderfully rainy day, and a nice evening together with good food.

Part deux comes Monday. Our clan brings the pagan spirit to our unsuspecting neighbors by putting on Odin’s best red suit, riding an actual horse-drawn carriage through the neighborhood, and giving toys to poor kids. It’s a delight, year after year, to watch kids who bring relatives over to prove to them that Santa DOES exist, and he always comes to see them in person. So, prep often takes the forefront to celebrating ourselves on the solstice.

Not like last time.

One advantage of getting older (and lonelier):

When it's time to roll up the sidewalks, you can. No more waiting until 10 pm (or later) for the ritual to end and the members to disperse.

As for activities, I am listening to the very blessed rain — and also hoping the dry hills around us hold.

My other activity is finally going thru my stack of begging letters and sending them money, which in these hard times they can use. Just out of curiosity I decided to look each of them up on Charity Navigator — yes, they’ve all been good, very good.

I prepared a message for my fb friends about Ohio's Serpent Mound, an effigy of a serpent that points to the winter solstice sunrise. Created eons ago by Native Americans, the Mound was just designated a World Heritage Site. I feel connected to our ancestors and to you all on these special days. (I haven't figured out how to post pictures on DU yet, so I couldn't share as much here.)

instead of Christmas, lovely dinner, candles and no gifts! Instead, a substantial check to the local Food Bank.
