Pop Culture fluff: Moana shoes, fertility icons?

Young (pre-teen) niece is having a Moana themed birthday, and we are upgrading a pair of Disney shoes for her with alternating cowrie shells and red beads.

It struck me what the shells might resemble, and a little online search confirmed them.

So, ..? Am I doing something embarrassing, or just exposing an embarrassing level of ignorance by asking?

Many things in nature were/are used in worship and majik over the millennia. If you're uncomfortable with the symbolism on your young daughter perhaps you could handmake a variation sans that type of shell?
