Whoops! Looks like the Vatican needs spell-check.

A medal commissioned to commemorate the pontificate of Pope Francis has been abruptly recalled after the Vatican realized that it had misspelled the name of someone fairly important to the Roman Catholic Church.

That person is Jesus.

Or "Lesus," according to the papal medal.

there is no doubt these coins are now valuable. Are there any connections between the purchasers and those responsible for the error? I ahve a hard time believing that this error wasn't deliberate.

they probably just picked up the "L" instead of the "I". I doubt it was deliberate.

Ancient Latin didn't have the letters J and U. I and V were used instead.

In ancient Latin there was no J or U. I and V were used.

10. "ait" means "he says". I just noticed the use of V for U, as in pvblicanvm.

The period use would be consistent with the use of I for J. See your point, though. I suppose church Latin is from medieval time, after J and U were added to the Latin alphabet.
