Whoops! Looks like the Vatican needs spell-check.
A medal commissioned to commemorate the pontificate of Pope Francis has been abruptly recalled after the Vatican realized that it had misspelled the name of someone fairly important to the Roman Catholic Church.
That person is Jesus.
Or "Lesus," according to the papal medal.

(12,704 posts)there is no doubt these coins are now valuable. Are there any connections between the purchasers and those responsible for the error? I ahve a hard time believing that this error wasn't deliberate.

In ancient Latin there was no J or U. I and V were used.

(106,886 posts)The period use would be consistent with the use of I for J. See your point, though. I suppose church Latin is from medieval time, after J and U were added to the Latin alphabet.
