Canadian radio host Michael Enright accused atheists of showing intolerance while imagining evolutionary biologist as their first pope, should atheists organize into their own secular church group.
Atheists are not being prosecuted or silenced. They are lovingly tended by media interviewers, me included, and their nuanced arguments are politely acknowledged, Enright wrote in a commentary for CBC Radio on Sunday. The problem to me is that they wont shut up about it. The public, endless public profession of atheism to me reflects a whiny, whinging self-pitying narcissism.
Enright mentioned that he has interviewed both Dawkins and the late atheist columnist Christopher Hitchens, comparing the two by observing that while their arguments were nearly identical, Christopher had a sense of humour; Dawkins, not so much. He also accused atheists of adapting some of the trappings of Christian fundamentalism, singling Dawkins writing out.
His arguments are as immutable as Church doctrine; Enright said of Dawkins work. Religion is bad, there is no God and if there was He would be a monster, religion retards the steady, unquestioned march of scientific achievement.

This is one of the more idiotic things he's said. Anyone offended by this moron may take comfort from his 1997 statement that the Roman Catholic Church is "the greatest criminal organization outside the mafia".

(113,323 posts)last time I checked, atheists had not conducted the crusades, the inquisition, the witch burnings, the endless holy wars started and continued in the name of religious beliefs.

(146,218 posts)There are quite a few articles about the "atheist churches" here, if you want to find out more about them.
There is a couple from the UK who are on a US tour to open a whole bunch of these. I heard a PBS talk show the other day where almost every caller said they would really love to go to one of these things.
Anyway, it's a fascinating trend that is not yet really understood, but it is clearly a trend worth watching.

(19,705 posts)Well there is the problem, he is using his religious power (imagining things) and applying it to reality.
Seems to be a common problem among believers these days.

(82,333 posts)There is a sociological component to atheism, as there is with religion. It is not simply belief contrasted with nonbelief.

(19,705 posts)Again, this person is dealing in the imaginary, not reality.

(82,333 posts)Here's but one example.
It's not simply nonbelief. There is a societal impact.
