VATICAN CITY -- Pope Francis yesterday cleared two of the 20th century's most influential popes to become saints, approving a miracle needed to canonize Pope John Paul II and waiving Vatican rules to honor Pope John XXIII.
In a major demonstration of his papal authority, Francis decided that John XXIII could be declared a saint even though the Vatican hasn't confirmed a second miracle attributed to his intercession. The Vatican said Francis had the power to dispense with such requirements and proceed with only one confirmed miracle to his name.
The ceremony is expected before the end of the year. The date of Dec. 8, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, has been floated as a possibility.

(13,029 posts)can take "way too long" to become a saint. The whole concept is silly to begin with, and the RCC isn't even following the rather dopey and arbitrary rules they did have any more.

(71,265 posts)I am not a fan of the RCC method but by their standards it took a long time.

(13,029 posts)to make things up all the time? Do you really need certain things to be true so badly that you can't bear to tell the truth about them?
Over the last 400 years, the average time between beatification and canonization has been 49 years. John XXIII died 50 years ago. By RCC standards, it hasn't taken long at all. You could have found that out yourself very easily, but you chose to invent a falsehood. Why?

(13,029 posts)that by RCC standards, John XXIII took a long time to become a saint. If you didn't make that up, where did it come from? What RCC standard did you base that "opinion" on? The objective truth behind that statement should be easy to verify and demonstrate, if you didn't just invent it out of thin air.

(71,265 posts)I personally believe John the 23rd was a much more holy man than JPII. It should not have taken so long.
But yes it is not out of the ordinary for the RCC to wait half a century or more.
I am sorry for being rude to you.

(11,573 posts)The Episcopal Church has listed "John XXIII, Bishop at Rome" as a saint since 2009. The RCC is just catching up.
