A unanimous decision lets Mennonites keep steel wheels on their tractors.

MITCHELL COUNTY, IA. The call came at 8:39 a.m. Friday on a foggy morning in far northern Iowa as if a commentary on the haze that has lingered here over this issue for more than two years.
Daniel Zimmerman, a Mennonite farmer, picked up the phone inside one of his 3,000-square-foot greenhouses situated along the southern edge of Mitchell County. At the other end of the line was his attorney in Mason City, Colin Murphy.
Im doing fine, Zimmerman said. Maybe Ill be doing better if I hear what youve got to say.
Turns out the farmer was happy to hear Murphys news: The seven justices of the Iowa Supreme Court struck down Mitchell Countys 2009 ordinance prohibiting the steel wheels used by Mennonites. The court explained in a 29-page unanimous opinion written by Justice Edward Mansfield that religious rights prevail and that the county should be able to protect its roads with a less restrictive ordinance, without banning the tractors used by the Mennonites.

(21,147 posts)I don't understand what steel wheels on tractors and religion have to do with one another--especially with the excuse that if they had rubber wheels, Mennonites would use the tractors to to travel away from their community.
Perhaps I read this wrong, but seems rather similar to someone making coffee illegal to protect the religious rights of Mormons who might be tempted not to follow their religion.
Dear Mennonites;
Believe whatever you want. I don't care. I have two suggestions. Buy rubber wheels for your tractor if you plan to drive them on the road. Otherwise don't drive them on the road. Should you go the rubber tire route, I suggest that you do not use your tractor for family vacations or to move.
