London’s Atheist church The Sunday Assembly goes global with new Melbourne assembly

Atheist congregation The Sunday Assembly has got five more congregations outside of the Big Smoke, and is even going global now with one new Assembly starting up in Melbourne.

Five new Assemblies are due to launch over the summer, with the first in Exeter opening its doors in June 16, followed by one in Melbourne on June 30th and then in Bristol on July 14th. Assemblies in Southend-on-Sea and Brighton are schedule to follow, too.

Sunday Assembly was the brainchild of comedians Sanderson Jones and Pippa Hill, who held the first service for those who want to ‘live better, help often and wonder more’ back in the Autumn of last year.

Since then, attendance at the services have grown exponentially, with a new 1200-capacity venue York Hall in Bethnal Green needed to hold the influx of hundreds that are turning out on Sundays for the party.

There will also be a roadshow in the Autum – cheekily titled 40 Days & 40 Nights - when Sanderson and Pippa will tour the country, meeting local Assembly organisers, spreading the love and publicising the Sunday Assembly Everywhere Toolkit, a guide for setting up an Assembly near you.
