VATICAN CITY The College of Cardinals held its first general meeting Monday morning since the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, but the cardinals did not choose a start date for the conclave from which the next pope will emerge.

Cardinals have said they expect at least a few days of meetings before the conclave begins, as they get a better feel for the issues facing the church in different parts of the world but also for one another. Some experts have suggested that a shorter period before the start of a conclave could benefit a better-known candidate, while a longer period could allow a lesser-known candidate to emerge ...
