Thats my opinion

"The mills of the gods grind slowly...."

This morning THE NATIONAL CATHOLIC REPORTER, the leading independent Catholic news outlet in the nation, endorsed the ordination of women to the priesthood. I believe it is intelligent to support and encourage progress from those both inside and outside the church. It is certainly far more productive than blasting away at what hasn't happened.

The Vatican has already sent in Bishops and Cardinals to reign in those uppity nuns who are far too focused on helping people and not focused enough on preaching about how horrible homos and abortion are.

Supporting women in the priesthood is a HUGE blow to the all-male hierarchy of the church and is not going to be very popular with the Vatican or the rest of the good 'ole Priests club.

While individuals might face ex-communication, the church can't shut them down.

The next time the members of the Catholic church get to vote on this, I'm certain this endorsement will help.

What? They don't vote on the issue themselves? Oh, I see, it's a representative democracy like the US. OK, so the next time the pope is up for re-election...

What's that? They don't vote for the pope? Ah. Well then the next time the cardindals are up for re-election...

Oh, yeah.

You can blast and label me "unintelligent" as much as you want for being encouraged, but not particularly overjoyed at this token symbolic gesture. Let me know when that corrupt, misogynistic, anti-progressive institution actually begins to change.

Meanwhile, did you hear about the woman who received an unwelcome advance at a skeptics convention? Tut, tut. Those non-believers sure do have a sexism problem they need to work on, don't they? Let's cluck about that!

Despite recent Vatican pronouncements (which I'm sure delight anti-Catholic bigots) the matter is not doctrinally closed.

the demise of Pope Benedict and most of the cardinals, because there's no way they're going to consider such a proposal.

I don't expect to see it in my lifetime (admittedly fewer yrs than most on this board) or in the lifetime of anyone past 60.

"Don't be a hater, there are individual Catholics who hold admirable opinions yet have absolutely no chance of changing the awful anti-progressive policies of their church! Also please ignore the fact that most of those same Catholics are giving money to support the institution in its current state."
