Related: About this forumChristian Mingle Drives Me Crazy
I'm not sure why but these Christian Mingle commercials drive me nuts. I hate the fact that Christians yet again are separating themselves from the rest of society...as if they are somehow better than the rest of us. And they claim not to be judgemental.
I love the line: "Sometimes we wait for God to act when God wants us to make the first move." or something like that)
I emailed them the following: Thank God your organization is here. It is wonderful to have a dating service that protects us from the sinful unbelievers in the world.

My apologies to the Christians here...my wife is a Christian (yeah, we are unevenly yoked) and she can't stand the commercials either.

(146,218 posts)Sometimes people feel it's important to meet possible mates that share their religion.
There are plenty of sites that either don't emphasize religion at all or give people an opportunity to search using that as a criteria.
FWiW, I have never seen the commercials, so I can't comment on whether they are just plain annoying. I was just unsure whether it was the commercial itself or the fact that it was a christian dating site.

(601 posts)Several reasons, actually. The ads (I'm paraphrasing of course) suggest that God "intends" for the viewer to find their soulmate on that website. So it's an endorsement, really, from the almighty? God prefers his followers to use that website as opposed to, say, Match.com? And of course, Christian mingle is for opposite-sex couples only. Gay couples are going to hell anyway, so who cares, right? Meanwhile, Jesus (the same Jesus from Christianity) said not one single word about gay people.
The bigger point that, as an atheist, really really grates on me is that "God" is deeply concerned about our relationship status. To the exlcusion of stuff like war, famine, violence, poverty, televangelist con-men, etc etc etc. That personal-Jesus bullshit, which is so enormously selfish and pea-brained. Oh I probably should shut up now.

(111,359 posts)not for casual daters. It's a thinly veiled message to fundies that not only says it's the only site with god's stamp of approval, but that marriage is the only moral outcome for meeting any person of the opposite sex (forget same sex).
I don't have the kind of ego that requires an almighty god to be at my beck and call, either.

(25,183 posts)I have a good friend who's Mormon, and he found a woman from South Africa who took his ass to the cleaners. Some idiots actually believe that their invisible skyfather will protect them from harm if they go to the "right" religious dating website.
It's where the scammers love to play.

(16,191 posts)There are dating sites dedicated to old people, young people, gay people, african americans, latinos, assyrians, short people, overweight people, tall people, thin people, and people with every sexual kink or physical variation you can imagine. There are also Christian dating sites, Hindu dating sites, Muslim dating sites, Mormon dating sites, and other faith related dating sites for just about every religion out there.
It is absolutely NOT an exaggeration to say that there are HUNDREDS of dating sites on the internet. The biggies like Match or PlentyOfFish may get all the media attention, but they only control a small part of the overall online dating market.
The point of dating is to find people who are similar to you. People who share your interests and who you want to spend your life with (or maybe just a few hours of it...depending on the site).
Why would you object to Christian Mingle, and not buddhistpassions.com or overweightdate.com? Don't they ALL technically cause people to seperate themselves from the rest of society?
I can't object to anyone trying to find a sould mate. The world might be a better place if fundies got laid more often

I don't care for them either, but then I don't care for most commercials, especially Christmas commercials right after Halloween.

(25,771 posts)but when I hear lines like:
"Sometimes we wait for God to act when God wants us to make the first move."
I am afraid that the sentiment is going out as well to dangerous extremists nuts in their ranks - the people who would bomb clinics and murder doctors or others such as the gunman at the Unitarian fellowship in Tenn.
Those nuts are just waiting for "God" to say "its your move."

(2,404 posts)Like I said, I'm not sure why it bothers me. Because my most frequent exposure is to Christians, I tend to focus in on them to the exclusion of others. Indeed, I'm sure that there are many dating sites that are specific to certain lifestyles, etc. However, I am of the mind that diversity is of great value. Those who tend to exclude others in their group do not sit well with me. With diversity comes knowledge and growth. This, "we are better than you" so don't bother joining us if you don't think like we do is offensive to me.
And no, of course, I didn't hear back from them.

(40,416 posts)Enough said?
Reminds me of Reverend Ted Haggard whining about homosexuals. Or, Benny Hinn. Or, Oral Roberts. Or, Peter Popoff. Or any other Christian charlatan who only wants more money. It helps if you pretend to speak in tongues, like Robert Tilton used to do... before he was exposed as a rip off artist. (Of course, everybody who speaks in tongues is, by definition, pretending.)
Hate all this bullshit!
