Religious groups, non-profits, to see Barclays events for free

September 24, 2012
By Natalie O’Neill

Underprivileged Brooklynites will be able to see top-notch entertainment at the Barclays Center thanks to a partnership between a Downtown neighborhood group and the arena that will make sure folks without the funds get passes to a number of anticipated stadium events.

Downtown Brooklyn Neighborhood Alliance’s complimentary ticket program will offer Brooklyn-based non-profits, religious, and community groups up to 50 tickets per event — a service community leaders are hailing as a great opportunity.

“We’re excited,” said Herbert Daughtry, a pastor at The House of the Lord Church who helped launch the program. “It gives people access who wouldn’t have had the chance.”

Senior and youth groups — chosen by lottery — will be able see performances from artists such as Jay-Z and Barbra Streisand, Daughtry said.

More Christian privilege afoot.

5. Still not seeing what the "religious" angle is here.

Why does religion, or the lack of it, have to do with anything?

Not being snarky, I really just am not seeing it.

Or one of your hosts can.

In the meantime, this is a continuation of the discusion over church bulletin discounts and fair discounts for Mass attendees, which IIRC, you opposed.

Since churches are non-profits already, do you see a reason to additionally single out religious groups for free tickets? Do you see more religious privilege?

10. Again, maybe I am just missing it, but it seems that the intent is to be as INCLUSIVE as possible.

I see the distinction in this case as the arena including ALL non-profit groups, not just religious ones. Its being offered to ALL of them, with no strings attached (like attending a mass).

Again, I am only seeing "religion" in this story because it mentions "religious groups and non-profits", which a religion story does not make.

"Eligible organizations include community-based and not-for-profit organizations; schools (public or charter); educational organizations, and religious organizations within the abovementioned Community Board Districts."
