There are really two big religions that actively recruit Christianity and Islam. I don't see and Hindus or Buddhists forcing their beliefs on others. Granted atheism is neither...

when you consider that many atheists now seem to be trying to "actively recruit"

for atheism. In saying that, btw, it might be wise to point out that "recruiting" isn't

the same as "forcing". One can't be "forced" to believe anything.

They would also find ways to impose their ideology on others by any means necessary. And I would say they are way more successful than the atheist could imagine.

Again, recruitment is not force or "imposition", It's more like a sales pitch

that you don't have to "buy"....That being said,

like it or not, there's still that "freedom of speech" thing.

How were gays accepted? How about contraception? Evolution? Sex education (based on biology) not Biblical principals?

Why the billboards? Signs on buses?

No different and no less irritating than the religious signs. Just lots fewer of them.

I can't talk about Islam from personal experience, but Christians spend an awful lot of energy preaching fire and brimstone to people who are non believers. But even that I consider an annoyance, these people came in with Raygun and have infiltrated ever part of the political process. Gays are not allowed to marry, abortions are being restricted, evolution cannot be taught, sex education is based on the Bible. Please for "God's" sake tell me I am wrong....

but my post did say that proselytizing by atheists was relatively new, so the answer

to your question would be that they have not yet developed into

a formal operation of any magnitude.

That being said, you can find quite a few of the "informal"

variety right here on DU.

Protestants, Catholics, JW... but not any atheists.

The worst were a pair of Nuns in a pizza shop. it was my first and only encounter with street preaching Catholics (and I grew up catholic). I finally had to demand the owners kick them out or I would call the police. No matter how polite my ex and I were to them, calmly explaining that we were not Christian and in fact were clergy of another faith, they continued to preach to my young children, telling them mommy and daddy were going to hell, trying to give them some religious medals, etc. I came incredibly close to threatening to kick a nuns ass........ it was a bizarre day.

When I was growing up, we would have these Jehovah's Witnesses coming around every house in our neighborhood atleast once a month to try and impose their ideology. And in college there were always Bible thumpers preaching fire and brimstone constantly. Organized religion is nothing but a Ponzi Scheme.

Yet to meet an atheist in that sense though.....

It's essential that a certain portion of the population have one.

It performs a valuable function in society.

There are very appropriate times to pull it out and wave it around.

And teaching children about theirs or the penises of others is the responsibility of those that care for them.
