I'm not sure whether the Freedom From Religion Foundation wants to be more like the American Civil Liberties Union or People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
The ACLU and PETA have laudable goals: The ACLU battles for constitutional issues such as free speech; PETA opposes cruelty to animals. But the ACLU fights its battles largely in court, arguing legal principles. PETA is more known for outrageous stunts, such as splashing blood-red dye on fur coats.
The Freedom From Religion Foundation recently challenged Mexican Fiesta's policy of admitting people to the festival on Sunday at a discount if they attend Mass on the grounds. Of all the alleged religious discrimination in our society one could target, why pick the admission policy at an ethnic festival? It's hard to see how this one is going to help the cause.

Real issues of religious freedom still loom out there. We still have a religious test for public office. We have a black president and clearly have accepted the idea of a female one, yet will anyone in our lifetime see an avowed atheist elected president?
