what you’re describing sounds like the axis mundi. However, all I get at the links is an invitation to download Google Earth.

That may be culturally determined, depending where one lives.

I would agree on culturally determined, but where we live is not so relevant anymore.

As near as I can tell, historians and anthropologists seem to agree with you here.
