Tolerance as a general term isn't necessarily a good thing.

Some people use the word, though, as if it were. Tolerance, to be understood correctly, needs to have "of {something}" appended to it, or it is meaningless.

Some people are tolerant of Donald Trump. Others are tolerant of racism. Others, as seen in a recent election, are even tolerant of pedophilia on the part of candidates for office. Tolerance of harmful things is not good, but it is an accurate use of the word.

Tolerance (n) - The quality of tolerating something, instead of disapproving of that thing.

In itself, the word is neutral. It requires further definition before being understood.

Tolerance, in itself, is not a positive characteristic or quality.

There are many things of which I am not tolerant, as well as many things I do not like particularly, but can tolerate. I am not just tolerant of things of which I approve. I am enthusiastically supportive of those things.

That's my opinion of using the word "tolerance" without defining what characteristic or subject is being tolerated.

Tolerance is simply not objecting to things one does not agree with or like particularly.

There is no need to "tolerate" something unless you dislike or disapprove of it in some way.

Which is why very few of the accusations of "intolerance" of religion that keep being tossed around hold water.

I, myself, am intolerant of many things, as are most people. The word is misused frequently.

even if you think that it is foolish, irrational, deluded and totally asinine, then you are tolerant.

But it would be nice if you could feel a little bit of it for those less fortunate than you.
