(4,921 posts)Really. He is a politician. Can we PLEASE--at least on a liberal website--keep religion out of government/ PLEASE?

trotsky
(49,533 posts)That you had to promote his religion at all is the problem. Not that you did it in the Religion group.
Do keep up, gilly.

(146,317 posts)I mean, why should anyone care. Most politicians are putative Christians. Most can name a denomination they belong to. It's difficult to get elected if you are unchurched, frankly.
So, pretty much any politician, Democratic or Republican will have that characteristic. Why does that matter?
Democrats are most likely members of some mainline denomination. Republicans are more likely to be members of some fundamentalist type of church.
Of course, there are a few Jewish politicians, along with a few Muslims. There are also a few who are atheists or just don't belong to any church at all, but those are rare, as well.
So, why is Doug Jones' religious affiliation of interest, even in the Religion Group on DU?
guillaumeb
(42,641 posts)and considering that Doug Jones identifies as a Christian,
and considering the enormous quantity of posts in this group that attempt to frame religion as an enormous problem,
I felt that a full description of this fairly progressive Alabama politician could include the fact that he is a Christian.
You may disagree, of course, and I respect that right.

(146,317 posts)What is the relevance of his being a Christian in a field where almost everyone is a Christian?
It's just a point of information that tells us nothing about him, really, that distinguishes him from every other politician.
See if you can name elected officials who have no religious affiliations. I'll bet you can't name more than one or two. Having a religious affiliation is a requirement for running for office almost everywhere in the USA.
I don't care if Doug Jones is a Methodist, Presbyterian, Episcopalian or anything else. It's irrelevant. Tell me what his political positions are on issues. That's relevant.
I have no problem with your posting that he's a Christian in the Religion Group. I just don't see any way that it matters.
trotsky
(49,533 posts)Oh, sorry, just predicting a response you might get.

(42,641 posts)And the fact that there are other groups here dealing with religion shows that DU members do feel that it is important.
