The Biggest Loser in the Alabama ElectionWhat events of the last year and a half have shown once again is that when Christians immerse themselves in politics as Christians, for what they determine are Christian causes, touting their version of biblical morality in the public squarethey will sooner or later (and often sooner) begin to compromise the very principles they champion and do so to such a degree that it blemishes the very faith they are most anxious to promote. And one of the biggest blemishesfor it is an open refutation of Jesus prayer that we be oneis when we start divorcing one another over politics. Jesus said it is our unity in him that will, more than anything, help the world see that you [Father] have sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me (John 17:23). No wonder few believe much of anything we say anymore.
The way forward is unclear. For to love ones neighbor in a democratic society means that Christians must participate in the public square to seek the common good. We cannot forsake our political duty, and that duty will lead believers in different directions. Its just that when we do engage in politics, we so often end up doing and saying things that make us sound and act like we dont care about the very values we champion. Perhaps the first step is for Christians Left and Right, when they stand up to champion a cause, to stop saying Thus says the Lord and Lord, I thank you that you have not made me like these other Christians, but frame their politics with, Lord, have mercy on me a sinner.

I'll sum it up:
1. A race between two Christian candidates in which a Christian won and will be sworn into office beside dozens of other Christians qualifies as a loss for Christianity.
2. Until about a year ago, Evangelicals were seen as moral paragons, steadfastly committed to traditional Christian values.
3. Evangelicals don't hate gays. They just want to exercise their legal right to serve whomever they so please.
4. Evangelicals don't hate Muslims. They just don't want any of them coming into the country.
5. Liberals think this is homophobic and Islamophobic because they only listen to the most inarticulate conservative Christian voices.
6. #MeToo and antiracism are biblical causes, but the country otherwise remains in a state of moral decline. Because abortion, single mothers, drug addiction, and euthanasia.
7. People don't respect Evangelicals because they promote candidates who profess Evangelical beliefs but fail to behave accordingly.
8. Unbelievers didn't agree with Evangelicals, but at least they respected them.
9. Worried about losing an election to the Democrats? Let your Evangelical martyrdom complex save the day.
10. Evangelicals need to participate in politics because you can't love your neighbor in a democratic society without civic participation. The gay people Evangelicals don't want to serve in their stores, the Muslims Evangelicals don't want coming into the country, the women Evangelicals don't want to have jobs or access to health care, the transgender people Evangelicals don't want to use the bathroom in peace simply don't realize they're just being "loved".
Yeah, wow. OK.

I think the nature of Moore's faults were much more significant than the hypocrisy of them.

It's tough being Christian in this country. Hopefully some day, he can open about his beliefs without persecution.

If the GOP candidate hadn't been a proven child predator, I'm pretty sure they would have won.

If he had been divorced or cheated on his wife at one point, I doubt Republicans would have cared enough to vote Democratic. Fucking kids, on the other hand, is a more serious offense than your run-of-the-mill Evangelical blowhardery.
