OPINIONS — Atheist stereotype puts stress on relationships

By: Alex Olges
Updated 5 hrs ago

When I dropped out of Christianity about four years ago, I refused to call myself an atheist.

I didn’t want to be associated with the “atheist stereotype.”

I saw atheists as mean-spirited people who had no regard for other’s beliefs or emotions. As I wrote in my column from Tuesday, this is not true, of course.

Some atheists may be terrible examples, but certainly not all are.

That doesn’t change the fact that I hate being atheist.

Perhaps it would be a different story if I were to be elsewhere, away from the extremely conservative state of Texas.

Either way, I hate being associated with the preconceptions that often come along with being atheist.

I’ll admit, since coming to Texas Tech, it isn’t as big a deal as it was back home.

Somebody speak to this guy, please.
