A Melbourne Catholic school criticised for not allowing a female student to wear the boys' uniform pants has vowed to allow the student to switch uniforms and review its own uniform policy.

...

The grade 1 student, Asha, wanted to wear the pants as she was uncomfortable playing sport in her heavy school tunic and thick stockings.

"I basically got a no," said Ms Cariss, whose petition garnered nearly 9000 signatures in three days.

However, in the wake of Fairfax Media reports on the issue, the school's principal contacted Ms Cariss on Monday morning, informing her that Asha could wear pants.

Especially when it was cold. They tried to ban long dresses on girls, and I don't know why. They were more worried about making sure our knees showing didn't set off lustful thoughts in boys, and that the boys' hair didn't fall over their ears, than they were about educating us. It was about control.
