'Jesus came along with the dark angels’: Mother charged with suffocating her daughter

Four-year-old Emily Rose Perrin was resting on her stomach, playing with her dolls, her golden curls hanging around her face. She was a happy child, her brother told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, though she battled cystic fibrosis, a genetic disorder that wreaks havoc on the lungs.

She was no doubt excited — she was turning 5 the next day.

Moments later, witnesses later told police, her mother — naked and possibly high — climbed on top of Emily and pressed her hands against the girl’s nose and mouth, according to court records. The mother was holding a chain dog leash, saying “she was sending Emily to see Jesus,” the documents said.

Tragic. A mother struggling with serious mental illness, surrounded by people telling her that a magical God will make it all better.
Where on earth would she get the idea that Jesus would make her daughters suffering stop?

"We’ll focus on two things — the positive reality that Emily is alive and well, without cystic fibrosis, without pain or injury, and in the presence of Jesus and all the saints who have gone before her,” Steve Smith, a family friend who led the child’s service, told the newspaper."

I'm sure religion had nothing to do with it, amirite?

These hundreds of examples of psychotic murderers quoting God, equal ... lots of evidence of a provable relationship between murderous psychosis and religion.

Add in a few million more examples from pogroms, religious wars, plus a few quotes from Jesus explicitly endorsing "hate" and soon ...even the blind will see it.

By the dozens. Beginning with Freud's statement that "all religion is delusion." Then I expanded and updated that, with literally dozens of psychological articles. That essentially showed that religion often has a significant causal role in psychological disorders.

Rug? In many ways, it is common sense. It should be easy to intuitively see how teaching people to believe that snakes can talk, say, could cause problems in their thinking process. Or teaching them that say, you can hear voices from God, in your head.

There are a huge number of Christian religious concepts that correspond perfectly to the more common serious psychological disorders. Teaching people to hear a commanding voice in your head, would be one of them. "Hearing voices" is a major symptom of schizophrenia.

The technical issues here are difficult for general readers, and even for religious/psychological counselors. So why don't you address the commonsense objection here: couldn't it damage people's clarity of thought and sanity, to teach them to believe in say, talking snakes? And voices in their heads?

The etiology of mental illness is biological not intellectual. One is not educated into mental illness.

Furthermore, if you think reading Genesis intelligently and thoughtfully causes mental illness, then I'd have to say you may have read it too many times.

The whole premise of modern psychiatry is that biology is not the sole cause or cure for psychological disorder; that helping patients clarify their thoughts by speaking with them, teaching balanced ideas, noting problems with patients concepts, magical thinking, is a very major part of psychiatric treatment.

Biological determinism, just prescribing pills for every mental hickup, etc., turns out to be every bit as simplistic and dangerous as the use of "Soma" in Brave New World began to warn.

The mother was known previously to IL DCFS, who had been concerned about negligence but not about any more direct abuse. She had medication for multiple psychiatric issues but did not always take it reliably. She and her housemate used drugs on the day of the child's murder. The mother may have had some psychiatric episode that day, threatening to commit suicide and accusing her housemate of planting her fingerprints on a weapon in her car. The court has ordered a psychiatric evaluation.

without obtaining a detailed factual background

Of course, press reports are not always entirely reliable -- but they may be all the public can easily get

What we have here could be described in various ways

For example, the little girl's mother apparently smoked marijuana, climbed naked atop the girl, suffocated her, then threatened suicide. Later, when led into juvenile court for a custody hearing on her son, she apparently called a news photographer "demon spawn"

Is that crazy-as-a-loon -- or is it an attempt to evade responsibility by faking? I can't know -- but I can hope such questions are addressed by competent professionals who make an effort to consider actual facts, rather than by reaching for ideological answers that merely comport with their own prejudices

They claim that they can't take their kids to the hospital or medicate them. There are anti-vaxers. Then those who are just not very responsible and don't insist on seat belts. Some people leave loaded guns in their home and let their children have access. And so many of them don't see a day in jail. And they don't all have the excuse of having a suffering child, mental illness, and people that validate the conclusions their mental illness has taken them to all at the same time.

I don't see this as a direct link to religion being the problem too many things converge at once. I do believe it played a role of course. However, the mental illness alone could have caused this tragedy all by itself.

If religious belief is not to be considered a form of mental illness (delusion), then it certainly plays a primary role in furthering and enabling actual mental illness.
Is religion the primary cause here? Of course not. But had religion not been used to bolster this persons mental illness, they may have actually gotten medical hep long before this tragedy took place.

Religion does give some people the illusion of treating serious mental illnesses. Many will try to pray depression away as one example. In this lady's case I think she was trying to pray away something a lot more psychotic.

There is a major world religion that exists and most of its various sects teach the following as factual statements:

1) The man-god Jesus existed.
2) Jesus answers prayers and can heal people.

If one is in a precarious position with regards to one's mental health, the above teachings certainly don't help matters.
