Religious LGBT Jews come out online

Dozens of observant LGBT Jews have revealed their identities online, along with their sexual orientation, publishing their names and photos in a first-of-its kind campaign.

Dozens of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender religious Jews have revealed their identities and sexual orientation online, publishing their names and photos in a first-of-its kind campaign.

Titled "Our Faces," the campaign is the work of Bat Kol, an organization of religious gay women, and Havruta, the men's equivalent, in cooperation with religious groups at the IGY (Israeli Gay Youth) NGO.

The groups published the details of 44 members of the religious LGBT community. For some of them, this initiative marks their first public coming-out.

The campaign was preceded by a message to religious newspapers with a list of the participants' names. Now they are taking an additional step – being photographed and saying which religious schools they went to, in addition to stating their current relationship and family status.

HOMOSEXUALITY IN ORTHODOX JUDAISM Rabbi Dr. Nachum Amsel
THE CLASSIC TORAH VIEW OF HOMOSEXUALITY

The Torah clearly states its views about the act of homosexuality. The act of homosexuality, i.e. two men having sexual relations, is prohibited (SOURCE #1). The act is twice called a ìToaiva- an abominationî and it is such a severe sin, that it merits the death penalty in a Jewish court system (SOURCE #2). If not for the fact that homosexuality is prevalent in Western Society today, there would be little controversy about this Torah sin. It is clearly forbidden and never condoned anywhere in the Torah.

The very context of the prohibition (SOURCE #1) shows the Torah view. It is couched between the prohibitions of child sacrifice (to an idol) and bestiality (sexual relations with an animal). In most countries today, these two acts are considered abhorrent and contrary to modern values. It is only because homosexuality is relatively widespread and condoned by many people, that it seems that the Torah is ìout of stepî with the real world. This is an important issue that has clear ramifications, and will be discussed below.

The Bat-Kol – Religious Lesbian Organization was founded in 2005 by a group of women who were not willing to relinquish their religious identity or their right to live their lives as lesbians.

The HAVRUTA – RELIGIOUS GAYS NGO (ISRAEL) is a religious community of gay men who belong to the religious society and work together to achieve tolerance and acceptance to LGBT individuals in the religious society.

If they won't let Rabbi Amsel define them, you won't either.

Orthoox Jew = The Torah is sacred, from god
The torah says homosexuality is an abomination

Something has to give: the belief or the sexual orientation.

Why not? Judaism seems to pretend it's "something" more than just a religion more than other religions. But I don't see how one can be "orthodox" and "LGBT" too.... I mean without denying the LGBT part or redefining what "orthodox" means.

Religion is ridiculous.

Some things just don't mix.

A gay person can't agree with a book that says their sexual orientation is an abomination.

Unless the person is a schizophrenic gay for the Torah, of course.

REASON FOR ALERT

This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.

ALERTER'S COMMENTS

Gays have as much right to religious freedom as straights, without having their sexual orientation described as a mental illness.

Being gay does not make one "schizophrenic".

Please hide this homophobic trash.

You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Tue Dec 15, 2015, 11:48 AM, and the Jury voted 3-4 to LEAVE IT.

Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Dishonest bullshit alert. Nowhere did the poster say'"Being gay makes one schizophrenic'. Stop alert trolling. This forum is for the open discussion of religion and irreligion. Grow up.
Juror #2 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: I don't believe this post is homophobic, it addresses supernatural delusions and their inherent contradictions.
Juror #4 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: Please be careful how terms relating to sexual orientation, terms relating to religious belief, and terms relating to chronic brain disorders are used together. It's easy to be very offensive without intent, if you don't think it through.
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #6 voted to HIDE IT

Juror #7 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Meh

Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.

What is remarkable that a simple point, i.e. the inherent contradiction between belief in certain holy books and behaviors that are in direct contradiction to what these books say, almost successfully alerted: left alone by only one vote.

My congratulations to the alerter who is either
1/incapable of connecting sentences to understand the general meaning of a post
2/overly defensive about homosexuality, or
3/a theist trying to settle scores
