Archbishop Justin Welby admits 'doubt' over God's presence after Paris attacks

He said religion was being used as a 'powerful tool' to manipulate people

The Archbishop of Canterbury has previously said he sometimes questions if God "is there" Getty
The Archbishop of Canterbury has admitted the Paris attacks left him questioning the presence of God.

Justin Welby, the most senior bishop in the Church of England, said the deaths of 130 people during the attacks on 13 November had "put in a chink in his armour" of faith.

I'm sure he quickly recovered from his attack of rational thought.

1. Attacks of rational thought have been known to be successfully treated by infusions of holy writings

One page of holy writing per cup of water + one cup of water for the pot.

Time of maceration depends on the desired strength of the drink.

Amen. Ameen.

Masses of people dying in natural disasters, like tsunamis or volcanic eruptions?

on the Archbishop's part. Well, since he and his wife loved Paris because it's "a happy place", I guess it's OK. They probably wouldn't have found Auschwitz to be as happy.

Hitler's ovens didn't blow God right out of the water for this fellow? Frankly, he should have taken more history classes than theology classes and he might have chosen a different (and more helpful) profession.

5. Arguing religion is above my pay grade. However, if you believe in God, and can still rationalize

Hitler and Pompeii, then rationalizing Paris should not be a problem for you. On the other hand, if deaths are going to put you off God, how did you not get put off God when you learned of the deaths caused by Hitler and Vesuvius?

My guess: This guy has been having doubts for a long time and has seized on Paris to make his doubts public.

some don't believe.

I assume it's true of the laypersons too, even if they won't admit it. The Anglican church was talking about bringing back tribunals to ferret out vicars and priests that don't believe, in 'interviews' behind closed doors.

These churches are terrified that people will figure out they are full of shit.

He is simply a continuation of the spineless Archbishop of Canterbury predecessor Rowan Williams.

Real leadership would be nice.
