Soon, however, I examined the matter from the very beginning. At the very beginning, she was not living, having no form, nor even substance. But somehow or other there was then her substance, then her form, and then her life. Now by a further change, she has died. The whole process is like the sequence of the four seasons, spring, summer, autumn, and winter. While she is thus lying in the great mansion of the universe, for me to go about weeping and wailing would be to proclaim myself ignorant of the natural laws. Therefore I stopped!” ...

When Chuang Tzu was about to die, his disciples began planning a grand funeral. But Chuang Tzu said: “I shall have heaven and earth for my coffin, the sun and moon will be jade symbols hanging by my side; planets and constellations will shine as jewels all around me, and all beings will be present as mourners at the wake. What more is needed? Everything is amply taken care of.” But the disciples said: “We fear that the crows and kites will eat our Master.” Chuang Tzu replied: Well, above the ground I shall be eaten by crows and kites, and below the ground by ants and worms. In either case I shall be eaten – so why are you favoring the birds?”

Chu-King sends two officials saying: I want you to rule my realm

Zhuangzi without looking says: Chu-King has holy turtle, dead three thousand years, wrapped, in temple. What should you think? Would turtle prefer its bones honored -- or to live dragging tail in mud?

They answer: Dragging tail in mud

Zhuangzi replies: So go! I too drag my tail in mud!
