Maldives: Gemanafushi unwed mother convicted to death by stoning

Gaaf Alif atoll Gemanafushi island’s magistrate court sentenced Sunday a woman to be stoned to death for extramarital sex.

The unprecedented verdict comes based on the convict’s confession following giving birth out of wedlock.

The court prescribed the ruling in accordance with clause 1205 of the new penal code under the Hadd punishment of Islamic Sharia law.

The clause states that even where civil punishments are prescribed, if a case is proven beyond doubt under Islamic jurisprudence, the verdict has to be delivered in favor of Sharia.

The civil authorities seem a bit surprised that they have a law letting Sharia law take precedence, so they're going to appeal.

The Maldives are, to many Europeans, a set of beautiful tropical islands for vacations. The fundamentalist nature of its state is brushed under the carpet.

... the Supreme Court annulled the lower court’s verdict in a ruling issued Sunday evening. The apex court said the Gemanafushi magistrate court had failed to consider legal and Islamic procedures and rules set for rulings in cases of the nature.

The Supreme Court also ordered the closure of the case and hand over case files by 12pm Monday.

The Maldives have become increasingly strict in recent years.

In Indonesia, the Sharia police in the province of Aceh is also becoming medieval.
