The change to the law, announced last week and effective as of yesterday, has been called anti-Semitism by Jewish leaders and a clear interference in religious freedom by the non-profit group Danish Halal.
European regulations require animals to be stunned before they are slaughtered, but grants exemptions on religious grounds. For meat to be considered kosher under Jewish law or halal under Islamic law, the animal must be conscious when killed.
Yet defending his governments decision to remove this exemption, the minister for agriculture and food Dan Jørgensen told Denmarks TV2 that animal rights come before religion.

I'm a bit conflicted over this one as I don't know the motives.

(16,423 posts)You need a sharp knife where the blade has exactly the right length. You stab the animal frontal but slightly sideways into the neck (sharp edge to center) and then you cut the carotid arteries with one swift cut to the other side. The animal bleeds out and loses consciousness within seconds and is dead within a minute.
That's how it was done in my grand-parents' village.
How about we focus on how the animals spend their living-years instead of how they spend their dying-seconds?

(49,533 posts)You should know better, mr blur. We must apply *different* standards when it comes to religious beliefs. In any other context, slicing off a portion of a child's genitals is barbaric and outrageous. When part of religious tradition, it becomes "beautiful" and "normal."
Here, minimizing the suffering of animals is ordinarily a great thing. However if it interferes with the practice of someone's religious beliefs, then it is "bigoted" and "bullshit."
