Social change and religion in the 21st century.

Things are changing. I think it's worth noting that change these days grows more as a bottom up evolution and not a top down situation. There's always been that dichotomy, yet it seems more pertinent now than in the recent past. In all venues - social, political, judicial and religious.

Progressive change has become mainstream. And diverse. Part of that is an awareness that no one singular person will walk on stage and make it all happen for everyone, everywhere. We all, as part of the culture are players in the game. For better or worse, we have a voice in this digital world. And a role to play. I think that abdicating that responsibility and that influence is a cop out.

In regards our focus here, I'll use the pope as an example. He's not going to single handedly change the RCC bureaucracy. He's not going to be everything to every Catholic on the planet. Nor is he going to meet expectations of the religious, atheist, agnostic or uninterested among us.

Some come to our attention as lightning rods, a heads up of sorts. Ghandi, Mandella, MLK, JFK, John XXIII come to mind as outstanding examples. Agents of change. Yet it remained to us to follow up. We can choose to dismiss them or take the best of their examples and go on.

Don't intend to overplay the point, just want to encourage a whoa! on the expectations of any one individual. In any venue.

Those who remind us how horrible and backwards the pope is on issues that are important to progressives need to shut the hell up, and we should only be praising him for his climate change announcement.

Too bad you don't get to control what people talk about.
