Cardinal Raymond Burke, who was recently moved from a senior role in the Vatican to be patron of the Order of Malta, told the Newman Society, Oxford Universitys Catholic Society, last night that he struggled to understand any nation redefining marriage.
Visibly moved, he went on: I mean, this is a defiance of God. Its just incredible. Pagans may have tolerated homosexual behaviours, they never dared to say this was marriage.

(57,349 posts)I struggle to understand religious homophobia. Just can't wrap my head around hating people because your god wants you to.
And the horror of governments wanting to grant them the same human rights as straight people, cue the drama.

(41,210 posts)As well as his hostility to 'redefining marriage' (as though marriage hasn't been constantly redefined over the centuries), he is obsessed with the need for traditional gender roles, and with applying traditional church laws rigidly: e.g. denying communion to the divorced and remarried.
He has come under a lot of criticism both from within and outside the church for his harsh attitudes, and also for his ostentatious dress, etc.
What *I* would like to know is *who invited him and his homophobic comments right into my own bloody backyard*?!
