National Islamic furor focuses on Irving vote tonight

Irving, Texas -- A national furor over Islam has touched down in the heart of North Texas, where Irving’s mayor has accused mosque leaders of creating separate laws for Muslims, and requested a City Council vote this evening to endorse a state bill that Muslims say targets their faith.

The dispute has made Mayor Beth Van Duyne a hero among a fringe movement that believes Muslims — a tiny fraction of the U.S. population — are plotting to take over American culture and courts.

“It fuels anti-Islamic hysteria,” said Zia Sheikh, the Islamic Center of Irving’s imam.

“Her whole point was to rile up her supporters. ... People are trying to galvanize their base. The problem is we become the whipping boys.”

But she does know all the dog whistle code words and phrases.

I hope she loses this vote and loses it big.

You are buying her BS and that of the rabid RW'ers in Europe and among the religious right in this country..

It's not an alternative authority at all.

There is a long tradition of organizations that provide mediation services for their services. Jews and Christians do it all the time.

These services are voluntary and an attempt to resolve issues without going to the courts.

Your second paragraph is so ugly I can't even respond to it. I know where it's coming from. The reason that a lot of citizens in the UK are rabidly anti-immagration is because they are bigots to their cores.

The attitude that you express is what leads to the marginalization of muslims in the UK and that is exactly what extremist groups hope for.

Let's get hysterical!

I don't see any support. Just noting the aground for why such a thing has even come up.

"These services are voluntary and an attempt to resolve issues without going to the courts. "

By what authority?

muslims and how they are trying to take over?

Go ahead and say so if you are.

I'm not hysterical and your use of that term is offensive. This was one of the most islamophobic posts I have ever seen here.

Let's try this on for size: "Homosexuals have demonstrated they cannot be trusted in this regard." Ok in any context whatsoever? I don't think so.

And before you go and get all judgmental on me, find out what mediation is all about. It's a service provided to people that are having disputes and is fully voluntary. There is no "authority". It saves people tons of money, to say nothing of the rancor and hate that a court case can stir up. It doesn't permit people to circumvent the law.

Jews and christians do it all the time. So do non-believers. Do you object to that?

Or is it just those muslims that you object to?

I was just looking at the things he said that had been reported about in Europe.

I see "North Texas" and "accused mosque leaders" and I just roll my eyes. I'm sure it's stupid.

But I'm not scared of Muslims. Why would they be pulling out the "Muslims are taking over TX" Now?

Oh I see.... because of what's going on in Europe.

Personally, I thought of Hobby Lobby and OK legislators.

some people in Europe right now. It's really ugly and has no place here.

There is nothing going on in Europe except extreme xenophobia and bigotry.

They are pulling out the "Muslims are taking over Texas" because it works politically with a specific demographic.

In your haste to find something wrong with everything I say, be careful who you lie down with.
