PM tells of early Salvo memories

Prime Minister Julia Gillard has kicked off the Salvation Army's Red Shield appeal, reminiscing about her childhood association with the Salvos in Adelaide.

Ms Gillard announced the government's appeal contribution of $350,000 during a visit to her home city of Adelaide on Thursday.

Ms Gillard, herself an atheist, said the army was "Christianity with its sleeves rolled up".

"The style of evangelism of The Salvation Army attracted some robust and, at times, even violent opposition in the early days," she said.

"We are reminded just how courageous those first Salvationists were when you realise that two officers died for the cause and more than 100 were fined or imprisoned for singing or preaching in the streets."

Today they hold right-wing positions on most social issues - abortion, homosexuality, poverty (even going so far as to embrace the crap about "the poor will always be with us&quot , end-of-life decisions, marriage, and on and on.

The bit of good they do is seriously outweighed by their policies THAT EXACERBATE WHAT THEY CLAIM TO BE FIGHTING.

Plenty of other charities do good work for others without the right wing hateful garbage attached. Give your money to them, not the SA.
