Pope Francis' Woman Problem

http://www.latimes.com/opinion/la-oe-moss-pope-francis-women-20141208-story.html

At first, it was easy to overlook. With all of his statements about caring for the poor, the disabled and immigrants, and all the fanfare surrounding his famous “Who am I to judge?” proclamation, Pope Francis seemed like a breath of fresh air for a church stuck resolutely in the past. The fact that he never commented on the long-standing marginalization of women in the Catholic Church, and asserted quite plainly that there would be no ordination of women, did nothing to dampen progressive enthusiasm for the new pope. There has been a hopeful sense that he would get around to it eventually.

He hasn't, however, and there is reason to question whether he ever will. Instead of a more compassionate and understanding take on the standing of women in the church, Francis has repeatedly embraced the traditional Catholic view that a woman's role is in the home.

Ten days ago, Pope Francis organized and addressed an interfaith colloquium on the subject of “The Complementarity of Man and Woman in Marriage.” The use of the doctrinal term “complementarity” signals the conservative underpinnings of Francis' views on marriage. The religious teaching of complementarity holds that men and women have very different roles in life and in marriage, with men outranking women in most areas. Although Francis did acknowledge that complementarity could take “many forms,” he nonetheless insisted that it is an “anthropological fact.”

Last week, in chastising the European Parliament on the subject of immigration policy, Francis provided another alarming insight into his attitudes toward women, this time in his choice of metaphor. He described Europe as a “grandmother, no longer fertile and vibrant,” but instead “elderly and haggard.” At 77 years old, presumably Francis still thinks himself relatively vibrant and useful to society. Women of his age, however, have apparently outlived their utility.

Have we seen ANY atheists or atheists organizations embracing such fundamental sexism and denigration of women?

Would you like links?

Yes? Okay. Let's start with this one.

Ongoing crusade against feminism

Rather than move on gracefully, Mason has continued to make ill-informed comments on feminism within the skeptic community, to air his grudges, and to display the same immature attitude to criticism, churning out of a series of bitter and increasingly unhinged videos attacking feminists within the atheist community, typically full of strawman stereotypes and anally literal misinterpretations of their comments.

At the end of 2012, he posted a video entitled "Why 'Feminism' is poisoning Atheism." This was followed a few days later by a follow-up video, which responded to one vlogger's reply. In both videos, Mason attacked feminists (namely Rebecca Watson, Amy Roth, PZ Myers, and the unnamed vlogger he was responding to) who had raised issues over conduct at skeptic conventions and had instigated or supported anti-harassment policies. The videos are heavy on strawmen; they misrepresent feminists' arguments to an extent that is either grossly naive or wilfully disingenuous, and propagate stereotypes of feminists as frigid, joyless "professional victims". To underline this point, the second video contrasts footage of Watson and others talking seriously about their concerns, with a montage of party photos showing Mason and his pals larking around in silly costumes, drinking and hugging. Victory!

In March 2013, he released a video creatively entitled "Feminism versus FACTS", focusing on Anita Sarkeesian's "Women vs Tropes in Video Games" series. This was followed by a second and third "Feminism versus FACTS" video,[32] and then by a third "'Feminism' is poisoning Atheism" video. Then, as if perhaps he thought his audience hadn't got the message yet, he put out a video in November 2013 entitled "Why 'feminism' poisons EVERYTHING", yet another cranky tirade against the likes of Anita Sarkeesian and Rebecca Watson.

While he has released another video in the series, the videos are somewhat scattershot. He tends to go off on a tangent, repeat points previously made in other videos about other people and quote mine them, taking things out of context. The primary point he keeps going back to is that of sexual dimorphism causing most phenomena we see today about what is different between the sexes. He means to say that if we try to break out of traditional roles for men and women, then all we are doing is going against our own physiological trends. A second point implied by that is supposedly that different trends in physiological suitedness have naturally resulted in men and women being treated differently and thus we shouldn't call that sexism. Aside from committing appeal to nature, Thunderf00t is generalising too much here, implying that appropriate distribution of work in terms of military comes down to the same principles as the distribution of, say, corporate management positions.

What's that? You want video? Okay.

Do you want Parts 2 through 5 as well?

worth more money than any of us can even comprehend with tremendous political power? He isn't just a guy making videos on the internet that has lost a ton of his viewers because of his silly obsession with feminism?

I know I know. It may seem like I am making the mistake of trying to engage with rug. I am well aware whatever I say will just fly right past rug because he has no intention of having an actual conversation. This post is for everybody who reads his giant post of false equivocation.

All caps and all.

It's hard to have a conversation when Promethean speaks in the third person.

He believes that it isn't necessary because the problem isn't that bad, and a couple of people are making a mountain out of a molehill.

Francis believes that women aee inferior to men, and bases it on not only his faith, but also bad science.

Imagine that.

BTW, your comment, "Francis believes that women aee inferior to men". is just rank, dishonest horsehit.

Specifically

"The religious teaching of complementarity holds that men and women have very different roles in life and in marriage, with men outranking women in most areas. Although Francis did acknowledge that complementarity could take “many forms,” he nonetheless insisted that it is an “anthropological fact.”

And comparing europe to a "grandmother, no longer fertile and vibrant,” but instead “elderly and haggard"

So there is "rank dishonest horseshit" but it's not coming from me, although it is being accompanied by white smoke...

I mean, those women are Christians and he has really shitty attitudes toward them and props up really shitty policies that affect them negatively. Seems pretty "anti-Christian" to me given the current use of that term.

Who are pretty horrid.
Of course comparing some guy with an internet connection to the leader of a billion Catholics is inane.
And besides the point.
But probably a few.

Because, you know, some asshole misogynist gamer is also an atheist, which is just the same as being the absolute ruler of an institution that claims to be the moral authority for the planet and has around 1 billion adherents.
