A man caught urinating on the door of the Santa Croce church in Florence, one of Italy's most famous churches and the burial place of Michelangelo, justified his behaviour by claiming to be a non-believer.

The 24-year-old from Livorno was caught by police patrolling the area in the early hours of Thursday morning and quickly defended the act by saying “I'm an atheist”, La Nazione reported.

He now faces charges of performing an obscene act in a public place.

The church is the burial gound of Renaissance artist Michelangelo and the Italian physicist, engineer and philosopher, Galileo Galilei.

I wonder if all the drunks were atheists.

"Theist" isn't mentioned at all.

This is the headline:

National Review Writer: Women Who Have Abortions Should Be Hanged

I'll fix djean's statement:

Read it right here on DU yesterday!
Gives National Review writers a bad name.

I'm sure djean wouldn't want an inaccurate diversion to stand.

From the same local source:

Peeing American girl sparks Florentine fury

Residents of Florence, the birthplace of the Renaissance, have been given another reason to lament foreigners in their fine city after an American girl was caught urinating at a taxi rank in the heart of the city.

Taxi drivers and people sitting in Piazza Santa Croce looked on with dismay when, shortly before midnight on Thursday, an American girl crouched down between two cars and took a pee, the Florence edition of Corriere reported.

The scene was caught on camera by a taxi driver, who told the newspaper: “I couldn’t believe my eyes”.

“There were two girls,” he added.

“At first, I thought one had dropped her purse when I saw her bending down between the cars…but instead she was taking a pee. Others looked on with anger, but I wasn’t able to resist such a shameful scene, so I yelled at them in English, ‘animals’!”

Florence residents have long complained about foreigners behaving badly in their city.

City councillor Mario Razzanelli said last June that Piazza Santa Croce had become “an open-air brothel” after an American couple was caught having sex under the statue of mediaeval poet Dante Alighieri.

*

In October, a German tourist was told to clean Florence's famous Ponte Vecchio fined €160 after his daughter drew on it with a felt-tip pen.

The part you left out of your op:

Father Antonio di Marcantonio, its rector, has long lamented the drunken behaviour and vandalism in the Santa Croce area at night.

In February, an American student was caught peeing in Piazza Santa Croce, a stone’s throw from the church, while tourists have also been caught vandalizing the city’s famous bridge, Ponte Vecchio.

Wow, those atheists really get around.

Did she say “I'm an atheist”, like this guy?

Given the four paragraph rule, the irony of peeing on Galileo's burial ground struck me as more noteworthy than a rector's statement.

Your smiley speaks for itself, such as it is.

I'm sure you'd love to get a good hate on going for atheists over this but it's just not an atheist problem.

Who really deserves to be condemned for persecuting Galileo, a drunk "non-believer" who had to pee somewhere or your beloved church?

You're really scrapping the bottom of the Google Alert with this one, rug. Hasn't Dawkins tweeted something lately that you can post about?

Next time you're in Paris, add this to your phrase book:

"Vous fous de côté de Notre Dame parce que vous êtes un athée?"

If the answer is "Non", it is routine urban landscape.

If the answer is "Oui", you may want to inquire further.

But, hey, don't let reality get in your way.

Of course, first we have to realize all we know about the story is a very short "news" story.

But he did not say that "he peed on a church door because he's an atheist." When he was caught, it seems that he thought his claim of atheism would get him out of trouble. Perhaps he thought the police were the church police. Perhaps he was gassed out of mind and didn't have a clue as to what was going on. What we do know, from this wonderful story you posted, is that he didn't "peed on a church door because he's an atheist." At least he didn't claim that. We really have no idea why he peed on it.

And nowhere does he say that he did it because he was an atheist. Which is your claim. He seems to be saying that he doesn't realize why he is in trouble because he's an atheist. Which probably means he's a little slow on the pickup or a lot drunk or a combination of both. But he doesn't say "I pissed on the church because I'm an atheist."

But, again, don't let facts get in your way of a nice atheist slam.

Okay.

BTW, you can consider it "a nice atheist slam" only if you identify with this idiot. Or think atheists - or antitheists - can not do this.

I'll give you this: he wasn't pissing on the door of a kirk in Glasgow.
