When Longview's secular humanists come together each month, they meet in a back room of a local restaurant in semi-secret.
The irony of the scene that these non-religious East Texans resemble the early Christian church meeting in homes and upper rooms is not lost on the members.
It is because people on Facebook have threatened us, and just for people to feel comfortable. For someone to come out and join the group half of us are still in the closet, said Natalie Rumfield, vice president of the Secular Humanist Society of East Texas.
While atheists, agnostics, and other freethinkers have always been a part of Longviews culture, it wasn't until June that a group was formed specifically for them.
