Education can solve religion-science conflicts - report from AAAS meeting

(AFP) – 33 minutes ago

VANCOUVER — A perceived conflict between science and religion has led Americans to rank nearly last among industrialized countries in understanding evolution, educators told a major science conference this weekend.

But research suggests that education changes anti-science attitudes among even the most religious of students, while history shows that science can thrive alongside religion, said Kenneth Miller of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.

"Evolution is exhibit A on the cutting edge of the anti-science movement in the US," Miller told a symposium of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

"Effective education can increase the acceptance of science, but not by bashing religion," he added.

atheism bashing science. All the anti-scientific approaches come directly from religion or from minds confused as to what is logical because of those people's claims to "other ways of knowing". I agree.

the only book necessary for any person to read, EVER, is the bible. It's all there. Everything a person ever needs to know. And every single word is literally true.

Education kinda puts the kibosh on that whole idea.

rail against it the most. As a literature teacher, it is always the most conservative religious that are taken aback at any notion of studying something outside their own mindset and religious world.

adherence and prominence fades, and hopefully disappears. This has, universally, been the trend lately, and I don't see any changes happening anytime in the future.

to turn this country's science education into crap. The conflict is entirely real, and cannot be addressed without saying flat out that some people's religious beliefs are plain and simply nonsense.
