Birders
Related: About this forumWow! It's the middle of October, the temp is 45F and I still have hummingbirds this morning.
I always leave my feeders up until I no longer see visitors, in case a few stragglers still come by, but I would have expected them to all be on their way south by now.

(38,958 posts)but it's been over a week here in the St. Louis area. Probably let them go on another week or so then time to take things down and get ready for cooler temps.

(86,650 posts)left about a week before the Equinox! Super early! We've already had a couple snow events below 6Kft elevation and a hard freeze this past weekend. The rest of migratory birds have gone ahead of the cold snap, but I'm an hour north of the 45th parallel which usually sees regular migration but the arctic birds were here early as well. Most of us see that winter will come early and stay a long, hard time, just hope there's a lot of snow and enough bitter cold to kill off some bark beetles.

(86,650 posts)@ 5500ft, Summer was over in mid August, usually not that early though an occasional cold snap will pass through in the summer. We're about three to six weeks early for most seasonal change things. Been in the region for over 30 years and things just aren't the same in many ways as they were... even ten years ago. We get into the 100s in the summers now and we don't see that continued subzero phase that kills the beetles and stuff in the winters anymore. We might see a few nights of it here and there but it takes a sustained subzero temp to kill the larvae of the forest killing beetles. And we don't have snowpack that sustains the rivers anymore either. We might get a lot of snow but it melts so fast that we get floods and then drought. Sad, really. The changes are noticeable in many ways here.
