Birders
Related: About this forumThe hummingbirds are back...
I've seen a few different kinds so far but the ruby throated seems to be the most common one so far. I don't know that I could ever capture a picture unless I sit and wait but I might try.
Fun times!

(99,698 posts)images of birds has taught me so much about being patient (literally for hours) and appreciative. I've found that being on their time makes my time even better...

(55,981 posts)Lately our winters have been warm but a couple of years ago we had a very cold spell and the nectar would freeze after a few hours. I got up at dawn and tried to get an unfrozen feeder up for them but one morning I could see one of the birds trying to get the frozen nectar. I hurried out there knowing he probably didn't have much time after going thru the night. He perched on a bush about 3 feet away until I was done replacing the nectar. I had two feeders that I rotated every couple of hours, thawing one while the other was out there.

(16,339 posts)For more than a week now there have been several hummingbirds coming into my backyard and flying around close to the ground and then leaving. They would zip back and forth and up and down. Turns out they have been eating these little bugs that fly above my lawn during the mid-morning and late afternoon. Apparently they are very good hunters due to their vision and hovering and flying ability. They also have this ability to snap shut their beaks super fast because when they open their mouths wide the beak material flexes first and then snaps shut.
